ESN group criticises Commission’s Automotive Package amid competitiveness concerns

Brussels — The Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN) political group has voiced strong concerns over the European Commission’s proposed Automotive Package, warning that the measures could place additional strain on the European car industry.

In a statement shared with Euronews, members of the group argued that the package risks increasing production costs and undermining the sector’s global competitiveness at a time of economic uncertainty. They also raised concerns about the potential impact on consumers, citing higher vehicle prices and limited infrastructure readiness.

“The proposed measures add further regulatory pressure on an already fragile industry,” the statement said, calling for a more balanced approach that would better support industrial resilience and technological transition.

The ESN group further emphasised the need for policies that take into account the current challenges faced by European manufacturers, including supply chain disruptions and international competition.

The European Commission’s Automotive Package forms part of the EU’s broader strategy to accelerate the green transition in transport, particularly through stricter emissions standards and the promotion of electric vehicles. However, the proposals have sparked debate among political groups and industry stakeholders over their economic and social implications.

Discussions on the package are ongoing in the European Parliament, where different political groups are expected to put forward diverging views on the future of the sector.
