A centrist majority between EPP, S&D and Renew is set to pass key files in both TRAN and ENVI, despite growing tensions behind the scenes. Internal divisions within the EPP and criticism from right-wing groups over opaque negotiations have exposed a more fragile political balance. While outcomes seem secured for now, this week highlights underlying fractures that could resurface in trilogues.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ahead of tonight\u2019s votes in the TRAN and ENVI committees, a majority between EPP, S&D and Renew appears to be holding, paving the way for the adoption of the compromise texts and the Parliament\u2019s position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TRAN: Majority taking shape despite EPP tensions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Internal tensions have surfaced within the EPP, with some MEPs not fully aligned with the negotiated compromises, particularly on key elements of the file. While informal contacts with far-right actors have been mentioned, they remain limited and unconfirmed. At the same time, the EPP leadership has secured an agreement with S&D and Renew, consolidating a centrist majority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Signals from within the group also suggest an effort to reinforce internal discipline, with the leadership clearly ruling out cooperation with the far right and urging coordination ahead of the vote. Despite these frictions, the compromise appears solid enough to pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tonight\u2019s vote is therefore unlikely to bring major surprises, but it will serve as a test of both EPP cohesion and the durability of the centrist coalition ahead of trilogues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ENVI: CO\u2082 standards under pressure despite expected majority<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In ENVI, the same coalition is set to back the revision of CO\u2082 standards, but the process is facing criticism. Right-wing groups (ECR, PfE, ESN) denounce their exclusion from last-minute negotiations, some held over the weekend, and point to a lack of transparency in closed-door discussions. The reported presence of the European Commission in these talks is also raising questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Internal frictions are also emerging, particularly within the EPP, where some MEPs are reportedly uneasy with the compromises and the way they were negotiated. These tensions, combined with a more vocal opposition, are contributing to a more confrontational atmosphere ahead of the vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the compromise should pass, mounting tensions highlight a politically fragile majority heading into the next stages of the legislative process, where divisions could resurface more openly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
