In the corridors of the European Parliament, party politics recently took a turn toward intense personal melodrama. A highly turbulent relationship came to light between the EPP. Following a period of shared celebrations, a sudden fallout triggered a formal internal trial to cut ties.Yet, in a bizarre twist, the political partners managed to patch things up and reconcile, all thanks to some strategic baking.

The Domestic Dispute: Accusations of Infidelity and Bad Company

The prosecution had nevertheless built a damning case, worthy of a destructive affair. The EPP accused Iborra of “secretly plotting” with the far-right, systematically voting in favor of ECR group amendments and sabotaging his own political family’s efforts on CO2 regulations. Even worse, he was accused of making public scenes: his participation in the protest that disrupted the ENVI committee and his social media attacks against the committee’s chair were felt as a humiliation.

Maximilien Jagiello also pointed out Romain Iborra’s “bad company” and his tendency to make embarrassing public scenes. On social media, Iborra acted like a “mini-Trump,” flooding the networks with an endless stream of aggressive reactions and launching personal attacks against the ENVI committee’s chair. This online behavior, combined with his role in the infamous “Article 67 scandal,” deeply humiliated his political family. In short, for Jagiello and the EPP leadership, the relationship had reached a breaking point, and it was time to expel this illiberal faction and cut ties once and for all.

To save his political relationship, Iborra played the classic card of the misunderstood partner. His escapades during the protests? A simple, legitimate effort to denounce the lack of transparency and the withholding of documents by the Secretariat—not a political attack, he swore. He maintained he never had any intention of dumping them by voting against the final agreement.

As if trying to rekindle the flame, he reminded them of his past “tokens of affection” and what he concretely brought to the household: the adoption of the 15% fine reduction and the definition of small electric vehicles. Asserting that others within the EPP secretly shared his reservations, Iborra claimed he was simply defending internal freedom of speech. 

Cake Diplomacy: Falling Back into Your Ex’s Arms

That is when the story took a turn. How do you win someone back after a trial for treason? During his closing arguments, Romain Iborra played on their emotions by reminding them that he had baked a cake to celebrate the EPP’s 50th anniversary. “I love this group,” he declared in a final plea. Against all odds, this “cake diplomacy” worked—one MEP even admitted they voted against his suspension solely because of that culinary gesture. The axe did not fall, and Iborra officially retains his seat and his voting rights.

The “Red Flags” of an Opaque Reconciliation

Yet, as in any toxic relationship, the reconciliation was made in total defiance of established rules. The trial was called in violation of the EPP’s own internal rules of procedure (Article 8). In a supreme twist of irony for an MEP who constantly denounced the chaos of the trilogues, the decision to drop his suspension was finalized through a secret and completely opaque ballot count.

They celebrated, they tore each other apart, and they ended up back together. It remains to be seen how long this honeymoon will last before the next dispute.
